Oasis...

... is the longest running residential Oriental dance retreat in North America. Beginning in 1985 and now offering retreats worldwide, Oasis is dedicated to educating dancers in the art of Oriental Dance and its related folkloric forms from throughout the Arab world. We create a uniquely fun and supportive environment, often tried but never duplicated!  Our creative staff is headed by internationally acclaimed dance artist, Cassandra Shore, artistic director of the Jawaahir Dance Company and resident instructor since Oasis’ inception. Special guest artists such as Amel Tafsout, Denise Enan, and Sahra Saeeda round out our retreats with their focused expertise in a kaleidoscope of folk and regional dance styles. We feature live drumming accompaniment for technique classes with the delightful and intuitive percussionist Nicole LeCorgne, who also teaches Arabic music and rhythms.

Oasis Pre-Camp Master Class  for 2010

Master class will begin at 2:00 p.m on Wednesday of each Camp/Retreat (Please see the event page for dates and details). There are two class subjects for 2010.  Sessions will be held one following the other with a short break in between.

Confused as to how to deal with the spicy blends of non-traditional dance rhythms like 8/4 10/8, 7/8, 5/4, or a funky 6/8? Cassandra and Nicole will discuss the origins of the beats, break down the rhythms to help de-mystify them, show you where the main dance accents are, and teach you combinations that fit each one, so that you can create your own steps to these dramatic moments!

Cassandra & Nicole

Cassandra and Oasis percussionist Nicole LeCorgne will share with us the secrets to the seemingly symbiotic relationship they have when working together in class. You’ll learn the keys to in-class and performance communication by practice of a basic skill set. Whether you are teacher or drummer you will gain the tools to make the optimum use of your accompanist during class time, and have fun doing it!
